pauleen was an abused and sickly child born from a poverty-stricken family. she has been deprived of love and kindness for many years, and this has severely affected the way she has interacted with her peers. her violence and need for superiority is a result of abuse.her parents look at her as a way to escape poverty, and so she was forced to do well in school through more abuse and starvation. she joined school theater as an excuse to stay away from home, and found warmth in seeing people cheer and smile as a result of her performance. it was then she discovers love.bringing this up to her parents, however, resulted in them badly beating her to the point of fatality. because if they canʼt be able to escape poverty, pauleen should rot alongside them.pauleen escapes in fatal condition. she makes one last wish to be kind, should she be reborn again. and dies.she wakes up after, being able to see the supernatural. her soul is in the boundary between life and death. thanks to her wish, she was given another chance before judgment.pauleen starts a new life as pao.
Born from a poverty–stricken family was a small, sickly child by the name of Pauleen. Up until the family could afford schooling, she was constantly kept isolated from outside contact and often starved off of meals as her parents valued their survival over hers.Pauleenʼs academic skill was outstanding enough for her parents to see potential—the chance to escape poverty. She was then forced to become an overachiever, beaten into obedience and fear.At school, Pauleen turned to violence to avoid bullying, though was constantly overpowered as she was too frail. In time, the little confidence she had deteriorated into loathing and hate. Sheʼd end up lashing out on more fragile and weaker kids in a frantic attempt to have a false sense of superiority.Further on, Pauleen joined theater for extracurricular credits—an excuse to stay in at school at a much later time, all to avoid her parents. She was growing more insecure—but the club was always kind, no matter how difficult or bitter she may be.Eventually, she found herself upon the stage of her first performance, resulting in a room filled with warmth, applause, and cheer... She knew then what she wanted and what was missing: love.
Bringing it up to her parents was not easy. When Pauleen had rejected their dreams for her (which were to take up a job such as Medicine that would make the family rich), she was bady beaten—bashed to the walls, kicked to the ground into a bIoody mess. Their ideology: if her parents canʼt be able to escape poverty and survive because of her foolish dreams, then Pauleen should rot alongside them.Pauleen managed to escape to the door in time to run away, although in fatal condition. All hope for survival feels impossible for her at this point, so she makes one final wish to change and be a better person if ever she doesnʼt make it. Sheʼll be more kind. Sheʼll learn to love the world.After that, she blacks out. Pauleen is dead.She wakes up in a strange place, different from the last one she remembers—although she does recall being in a bad condition, so it wouldnʼt be so surprising for the rest to be hazy. Itʼs a rather bizarre setting .. Not only can she see humans, but also cryptids, and angels, demons—creatures both obscure and mundane.
Itʼs limbo for the undecided soul, a mirror to the real world and a boundary between life and death. Though her soul is in this state, she is granted her 'human vessel' and the permission to interact with others to be judged accordingly—as her actions during the living may be hateful, but her last wish was heard by the higher beings behind all. Furthermore she can pass through different realms because of her 'limbo' state, but she cannot control this.Pauleen doesnʼt recognize this, though. Instead, she takes this opportunity to color her hair, abandon her old identity. (However, old habits never die, as she is still very prone to rare bouts of violence and spite.)Pauleen starts an entirely different life as Pao, a friendly 'human' who also jumps from job to job to keep herself alive. Although, she doesnʼt mind—she’s much brighter now after realizing how kind the world can be and realizing how much she wants to return the kindness to everyone around her.
